Scientists Suggest Avoiding These 10 Foods That Increase Your Risk Of Getting Cancer

Its common knowledge that diet plays a crucial role in one’s health.  According to PLOS Medicine, avoiding some food critically lowers one’s risk of developing lifestyle diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular conditions. This gets better as even cancer is kept at bay.

While the world is all about everything is carcinogenic, the PLOS study assures that you won’t automatically develop cancer if you occasionally grab a bite at fast food restaurants.

  • Barbecue or Grilled meat

Everyone enjoys a juicy steak, there is something inviting about a mouthwatering charred meat. Perhaps that’s why a barbecue is one of the most popular backyard party food in America.

According to experts at the center for Integrated research in cancer and lifestyle, the cooking process is known to activate cancer-causing chemicals.

Barbecuing cook’s meat in high temperatures which triggers the release of chemicals like Heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Both chemicals have been proven to cause cancer. The HCA’s cause the charring marks on the meat while the PAHs result from the dripping fat from the meat while grilling.

If you are in no mood to ditch barbecued meat, perhaps you should learn to grill proper or broil your food as an alternative.

  • Microwave popcorn

Everyone loves popcorn, especially with a touch of butter. While this snack is convenient, it may also pose a health risk. The non- stick lining inside the popcorn bag contains a chemical called perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Studies done on animal subjects have revealed that PFOA can increase risk of cancer in multiple organs like the liver, pancreas, and testicles.

Nutritionists still advise us to choose popcorn over potato chips while indulging. You should however, air-drop it, and avoid adding too much salt, sugar or butter.

  • Diet drinks and soda

Nothing beats the sheer relief of drinking an ice cold soda in the summer heat. However, the high sugar content in these soft drinks makes them cancer causing beverages.

Evidence has shown sugar to increase the increase the progression of cancer cells. This is especially if you take in more than your body can utilize. Don’t get it wrong, the body needs sugar to generate energy. However, excessive amounts are converted to fats and stored which can lead to weight gain issues and development of different lifestyle diseases.

Researchers have also ascertained that soda rinks including ‘diet soda’ contain additives and chemicals like 4-methylmidazole (4-MI) that have been proven to be carcinogenic.

  • Processed meats, pickled food

Meats are cured, salted and smoked while the vegetables are fermented to increase their shelf life and add flavor. Unfortunately, this is harmful and increases the food’s carcinogenic effect.

A review of 800 studies on processed foods has brought about some disturbing findings. Regular eating of 50 grams of processed foods increases one’s chance of developing colorectal, prostate and pancreatic cancer by 18 percent.

Experts therefore advise limit intake of processed foods to less than 20 grams per serving.

  • Canned food

The controversial chemical Bisphenol A(BPA) is used in the manufacture of most packaging containers. Tis man-made chemical can interact with food content, especially foods that contain high acidity such as tomatoes can drastically increase its cancer causing effects.

Researchers from Breast cancer UK say that exposure to minute levels of BPA can cause breast cancer and has been linked to lifestyle diseases like diabetes and heart diseases.

  • Beer and smoking

Regular alcohol consumptions are one of the leading causes of cancer. Only second to toxins that are fund in tobacco. Alcohol damages the liver, esophagus, colon and also leads to development of breast, rectal and oral cancer.

However, not all alcoholic drinks are bad, red wine when consumed in moderation has been known to have a positive effect on the heart.

  • Genetically modified foods

Genetically modified foods popular as GMO’s were introduced in the early 1990’s and have since then provided an ample supply of foods to humans. 90 percent of the total grains like soy and corn are derived from genetically modified crops.

However, not everyone is ready to embrace biotechnology and those who don’t have brought forward their own reasons

It requires chemicals to grow these crops some of which are known to cause cancer or accelerate its growth

Researchers have noted a significant increase in chronic illnesses since the introduction of genetically modified foods to the population.

Enthusiasts against the use of GMO insist that consumers should buy locally produced meats and fish that doesn’t rely on biotechnology.

  • Red meat

This is the most commonly known cause of cancer. According to the American institute of Cancer Research, consumption of 18 ounces of red meat a week could put one at a higher risk of developing cancer.

Lovers of steak increase their chances of developing cancer by 22% if they indulge in red meat on a regular basis. While red meat is an important source of proteins for our bodies, it is advised to choose and stick to organic- grass fed sources.

  • Foods made with white flour.

White flour popular as refined flour is processed using chemicals. The flour is bleached with chlorine to look more appealing.

The bleaching process does more harm than good. For one, it destroys most of the nutrients and also causes cancer. White flour is used to make popular pastries like donuts, cakes and pizza that triggers a high glycemic rate that raises the body’s sugar levels.

Experts have found a link between consuming foods made with white flour and breast cancer in women.

Generally, most consumables do not pose a high risk for developing cancer as compared to deadly viruses and smoking. If you are ware of foods that pose a higher risk, you can modify your diet, watch what you eat and generally stay on the safe side. The foods in this list are not totally forbidden, but should be enjoyed in moderation.
